HELEN

FRONTEIRAS DO PENSAMENTO

This approximately 25-minute documentary chronicles the disappearance and subsequent career revival of Brazilian musician Di Melo, who had released just one acclaimed self-titled album in 1975. The documentary's release in 2011 brought the musician back into the public and media spotlight, helping to revive his live performances in Brazil and abroad and inspiring his self-titled 2016 album. My work: 5.1 surround mixing and sound editing.

Television Series - Prosperidade Content (2019-2021)

Helen is a nine-year-old girl who lives with her grandmother, Dona Graça, in a tenement building in the Bixiga neighborhood of São Paulo. Dona Graça works as a house cleaner and sells grilled meat skewers in the evenings to support them both. The film explores social exclusion, political neglect, and the lack of basic rights experienced by those living on the margins of the city. Grounded in strong social realism, the film was screened at international festivals, including Cinéma en Construction, held during the Cinélatino Festival in Toulouse, France. It was recognized for bringing a sense of hope and sensitivity to an otherwise harsh social reality. My approach: I kept the score deliberately restrained and naturalistic, using music sparingly and leaving ample space for dialogue and the everyday sounds of the tenement. Rather than intensifying the film's most difficult moments, the music remains in the background, primarily reflecting Helen's inner world and the relationship at the heart of the story. The score only opens up when the narrative genuinely reaches a moment of hope, allowing the music to support the film's realism rather than impose emotion on a scene.

EFEFEITO RECICLAGEM

Original score for the television series inspired by Fronteiras do Pensamento, a renowned Brazilian lecture platform featuring some of the world's leading contemporary thinkers. In addition to composing the original music, I was responsible for mixing every episode in accordance with television broadcast standards. Across 16 episodes produced over two years, each installment focuses on a prominent contemporary thinker, including Werner Herzog, Luc Ferry, Mark Lilla, and Joshua Greene, exploring subjects spanning philosophy, neuroscience, literature, and the arts. The series aired on Brazilian broadcast television through TV Cultura and is available on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Canal Curta! I approached the music as a framework for the spoken word, rather than an additional layer placed over it. Each musical passage follows the emotional progression of the conversation — receding during moments of reflection, gently becoming more present during moments of discovery, and disappearing entirely when the words called for silence.

Places of Fear and Hatred

Documentary - Directed by Alexander Nakahara (2016)

This documentary explores a project that took 30 years to complete: the recording of 44 musical compositions, one for each poem in Mensagem, one of the most emblematic works by Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa.André Luiz set out to adapt every poem in Mensagem into music. The project resulted in 44 compositions, recorded and released across three albums and two DVDs over a period of three decades. The recordings feature renowned Brazilian musicians including Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Zélia Duncan, Carlinhos Brown, and Elba Ramalho, who also appear in the documentary. também estão presentes em imagens do documentário.

Winner - Best Sound Editing, 52nd Brasilia International Film Festival The sound editing and restoration process was particularly meticulous. The film brought together recordings from different periods and widely varying technical conditions. Some recordings contained dialogue that was extremely difficult to understand. Others, despite being more recent, suffered from clipping or various technical problems. There was also material that had originally been recorded to a high standard. The challenge was to bring all these different sources together and create a consistent sonic experience, making the material feel as though it belonged to the same film while keeping the dialogue clear, natural, and fully intelligible — an essential element of the film's narrative strength and impact. I completed the sound editing and final mix at JLS (José Luiz Sasso) in São Paulo, using a theatrical mixing stage to ensure a technically consistent and competitive result in any cinema. The film is currently available on Apple TV, Prime Video, Canal Brasil, and Claro TV+.

CRACK: REPENSAR

Documentary - Directed by Rubens Passaro (2015)

A documentary that confronts hate speech and prejudice through anonymous homophobic and transphobic graffiti left in public spaces, exploring the fear, violence, and exclusion these messages represent. The film is built around testimonies from people targeted by this hostility, including the person responsible for the graffiti. The film transforms anonymous, degrading expressions of hatred into an opportunity for visibility, dignity, and reflection. I composed the original score and was also responsible for the final mix. Working with such emotionally charged material required restraint and sensitivity. The music never intensifies the violence or aggression portrayed on screen. Instead, it creates a quiet, dignified space around the people speaking, allowing their testimonies to carry the emotional weight of the story, while the music emphasizes their humanity rather than the hatred directed toward them. I approached the score with deliberate restraint, keeping the music subtle and humane, and removing it entirely whenever silence was more powerful, so as not to interfere with the testimonies. The goal was to preserve dignity: to create music that surrounds the people on screen with empathy rather than reinforcing the violence of the words directed at them.com empatia, em vez de reforçar a violência das palavras que as cercam.

MITO E MÚSICA

Documentary - Dirigirected by Rama de Oliveira (2018)

A documentary exploring the world of recycling in São Paulo, centered on Claudinês Alvarenga — a charismatic father of 27 who drives around the city in his lime-green Volkswagen Kombi, collecting discarded plastic, cardboard, and electronic waste. I composed the original score and created its entire percussion section using recycled materials. Winner Best Original Score, Thanet International Film Festival, United Kingdom. Every percussion sound heard in the film was created using cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cups, and other discarded objects. In this way, the music was literally made from the same materials that Claudinês collects. My approach: I used the subject of the documentary itself as the guiding principle for the score. The entire percussion section was performed using recycled materials — cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cups, and scrap objects. The result was a rhythmic, organic, handcrafted sound that directly reflects Claudinês's work, transforming discarded objects into music, just as he transforms them into his livelihood. The melodic material remained warm without becoming sentimental, allowing the family's natural charisma to carry the film while the score provided rhythm and emotional depth.

A documentary addressing public health and encouraging reflection on how society understands crack cocaine use. I was responsible for the film's entire audio production: original score, location sound recording, sound editing, and final mixing. I kept the score restrained and humane. As the re-recording mixer, my highest priority was the clarity and presence of the voices. The film's impact depends on our ability to hear and trust the people speaking.

A documentary bringing together the voices and lived experiences of nine contemporary Black Brazilian women as they discuss race, gender, class, and the experience of being Black in Brazil. The film seeks to challenge historical silencing and invisibility, highlighting Black feminism as a powerful theoretical and practical force for social transformation. My work: Sound editing, mixing, and original score.
